Hiya - I had a great time last night. We won our match, and I scored again.

Natalie smiled at the smiley face and the ‘thumbs up’ emoji. He made her happy, and she knew he’d be here in an instant if she asked for his help. But this was something she had to do on her own. She didn’t know what was needed, or how she was going to do it, but that didn’t seem to matter. She checked the time. In less than three hours, the mirror would come to life. She considered googling the exorcism of mirrors but dismissed the idea immediately. She looked up at the mirror. From her seated position, she was too low to see her reflection. All she could see was the ceiling and the upper half of the opposite wall.

Natalie picked up her glass and raised it to the mirror. “Cheers.” She took a long drink and settled back on the couch.

Although there was nothing logical to base her theory on, Natalie believed the only way she could confront whatever was in the mirror was to make the woman in the scene her own actual reflection. Not some other version of herself again—it had to be her. If the scene involved the real Natalie, then she could lure out whatever really existed on the other side of the glass. She sat in silence and thought about what she had to do, and drank more wine to give her the courage to carry it out.

At eleven thirty, she stood and lifted the mirror down from the hook. She turned it on end, carried it across the room and placed it on the floor, leaning it against the wall opposite the fireplace.
